As a speech-language pathologist working with a variety of AAC users, I am happy to say that there is now an effective and efficient app on the market that is different from other comparable apps. I was lucky to win ChatAble from a Facebook giveaway in February and I use it on my iPad. ChatAble by Therapy Box has a variety of options for page setup including the typical symbol based grid pattern, visual scene displays and a combination of grid and visual scene pages known as a hybrid. I love creating and using the hybrid pages with clients working on expanding their vocabulary and print awareness as they transition away from picture based communication. Importing personal photographs for buttons and scenes is quick and easy, as is creating the hotspots on the visual scenes. The existing picture symbols and high quality voices are also great. Converting a cell to a folder is completed in just one touch, making this my favorite app to program pages in by far! In my opinion, the best aspect of ChatAble is the ability to record and use your own voice. This further enhances the personalization for the user. So far I have used the app with direct selectors and look forward to trying it out soon with an AAC user who currently uses auditory scanning with a wireless iPad switch. Keep up the great work Therapy Box!!

The brand new AAC app from Therapy Box, ChatAble This is an external link has just been released on the App Store – (literally hours ago!) and we were lucky enough to get our hands on a copy to check it out. My first impressions?? The app seems fairly intuitive to program, I was able to jump right in and start creating new pages with grids, visual scene displays and a combination of both – always a good sign and means you don’t have to spend too much time getting to know yet another app manual. But also good to know that the support features are there if you get stuck and need some help. I like the flexible input options such as using the grids, scenes, keyboard and handwriting – allowing for a wider variety of users, and to provide a system for today and tomorrow as the person’s skills change. Also great to have the access options for the same reasons. Click here to read full Review
