Who’s it for?

Colourful Semantics is an engaging learning game for all children but it is particularly helpful for children with disabilities such as language delay, specific language impairment (SLI), autistic spectrum disorders or hearing impairments.

What does it do?

Colourful Semantics colour codes different parts of sentences to teach children about the structure, order and components of sentences. It’s a great way to learn how to use nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives. Colourful Semantics was created for London Speech Therapy, an independent therapy provider for children and young people with speech and communication needs.

About The Client

Created for London Speech Therapy

London Speech Therapy is an independent therapy provider for children and young people with speech, language & communication needs. Founded in 2009 it now works in over 30 schools across London, Essex and Cardiff. Based from a clinic in Harley Street, London Speech Therapy now employs more than 25 speech professionals with a range of specialisms.

Project Objective

Colour coded learning app based on independent research

London Speech Therapy commissioned Therapy Box to develop an app based on independent research into children’s speech, storytelling skills, and language comprehension. The aim was to use colour coding improve children's ability to construct sentences.

Project Outcome

Fun animated game focused on improving grammar and speech

"The colourful app is instantly engaging. The clients I tried the app on were immediately drawn to the strong visuals. There is also an option to turn on the background music if you wish." Speechie Speaks review.

Multiple Levels

Colourful semantics can be played at different ability levels

Colourful Semantics contains a library of pre-built levels, ranging in difficulty from easy to hard. Each level shows an image and asks the child to describe it. The game breaks the sentence down in up to 5 basic parts – who, what doing, what, where and describe.

Multiple Users

Track the progress of multiple users

Multiple users can be set up on the same app and each user's progress can be tracked. There is also an option to play as a guest. All users, including guests, can export their results and data via email as a PDF.

Speech Playback

Colourful Semantics uses the device microphone to record and playback speech

Voice recording and playback can be done within the app so that game players can listen to their own speech. Research has shown this is a great tool for learning.
